I have used Netflix UK for a month on a free trial and would like to share my views on the service.

I must confess, I own an Apple TV and have waited for either Lovefilm or Netflix to reach the device: the US has Netflix, whereas the UK has endured Apples own catalogue of overpriced content on the device. I would like to first focus on what Netflix UK is doing right. Ditching the physical DVD postage model is a shrewd business move and the price of the Netflix service is very competitive. Lovefilm must know that Netflix are serious competitors, as they have retaliated by offering a similar lower priced streaming service. Netflix has mobile apps, browser streaming and device streaming, which although very buggy is very convenient when firing on all cylinders. I like the way you can pay for a month or two and then leave without any quibbles or hidden charges: American companies are customer focused because they realise that many people will not stand for opaque pricing plans. The quality of the streaming, when working, is good and although not quite HD, does the job of replacing an ageing DVD equivalent.

Now for the bad bits. More thought was needed in implementing the UK division. When signing up, using Facebook, it ditched my password and allocated a new one, for which I needed to immediately reset as it it wasn’t given to me on-screen or by email. Forget about phoning support as it all US still. The Apple TV Netflix app is buggy as hell and frequently cuts out and demands hard resets and frequent log-ins in and out of the app to get it streaming again: I use a decent internet connection and have APTV wired into the network. My iPhone app died and I needed to re-install it to get it streaming again. Audio quality is a little disappointing with the vocal range not cutting through. I can live with all of the above ‘teething’ problems but the biggest problem is the lack of content. I can’t believe that the service was launched with such a mediocre selection, mainly from Lionsgate. The only content area which shows promise is in TV shows: Channel 4 being well represented. Log onto IMDB, check the top 100 movies of all time and then check Netflix, I think the word underwhelming would be appropriate. Imagine walking into a charity shop and going through the old VHS tapes: Puppert Master, The Rock etc. Now it does have Robocop, Videodrome and Battle Royale, which are some of my fav movies but I want more!

It’s all about content Netflix, so if your reading, please add some big names into the mix asap: Fox, Universal, WB, Sony etc. Or if you can’t please find a niche with TV shows and independent film making + student showreels etc. There is a good streaming service there somewhere!

Although a little lean on numbers, there was a good atmosphere and the show still provides a good opportunity to network.
