About Me
My name is James Tobin, I’m a digital designer and muso. Considering many will wonder, ‘what is a digital designer’, you’re not the only one! I guess the best way of explaining the title is, I’m a designer who isn’t tied to one area. I work with graphics for print and screen and develop websites using code.
I studied product design and like many grads, a little unsure on what they want to do, I decided to pursue an entirely different path: music. I love producing and playing music but it is a difficult time to be a musician and doesn’t pay for bills, so music stays as an interest only. I love designing and approaching tasks laterally. I tend to look at the bigger context, so if someone ask me to design a logo I say: “do you have a brand? logo designs are difficult to design in isolation”. Logos are just one part of a brand identity. My work with We Perform and Evolution Artists demonstrates the idea of brand identity rather than here is a logo, or here is a poster I produced. It is the job of the modern design to ask bigger questions when a client asks about a new website or logo design. The days are gone where people need a website, the question is now, what can you do with it? In a world of shared ideas, open source platforms and accesible computers it is difficult to keep the role of designer alive. They are needed though and as tempting it is to put design on the bottom of the business itinerary and makes the world of difference when someone, who thinks differently, approaches your business in a creative way.
If you have found this site and you need some work doing please drop me a line and I would be happy to discuss.
